Who Rules?
The question to ask yourself is, who rules? Does God rule the details of your daily life? And who leads and makes decisions, you or God? The question of who rules is another way to say, who is in charge? Christians are called to follow Jesus. Therefore, it is important to answer honestly because you will need to revisit this question often throughout your life.
As you reflect on your life this past week or even today, who was leading, God or you? When God leads, you will have a sense of peace, well-being, and purpose. Only the living God is your creator and rightful ruler, so I hope that you are ready to step down from the throne of your life and hand God the scepter. Make today the day you surrender your life to Him.
You, O Lord, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation. Lamentations 5:19
God has the Sovereign Right to Rule
There can be only one king, one ruler. All others are usurpers to the throne.
God exalted him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11
Jesus is God in the flesh, yet He calls Himself the Good Shepherd, who lovingly leads believers. Are you following Him?
He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When He has brought out all His own, He goes on ahead of them, and His sheep follow Him because they know His voice. John 10:3-4
You Decide Who Rules Every Day
Jesus Christ is King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and when you believe this, your life will reflect His rule.
God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of Kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To Him be honor and might forever. Amen. 1 Timothy 6:15-16
A king has subjects who bow before Him, and this is the problem, is it not? Thus, the question of who is on the throne of your life must be answered daily, and a decision must be made. Who will lead? So, keep watch over your heart with all diligence, because the flesh and the spirit war within you for the right to rule.
Will you ask God now to help you change your allegiance from yourself to Christ and submit yourself to Him? Jesus guides those who rely on Him, and in the end, He will lead them home to live with Him forever.
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. 1 Peter 3:15
Only your Creator has the Sovereign right to rule, so God is pleased when you ask for His help and depend on Him. God is pleased when He leads, and you follow Him in Jesus’ name because you trust that He knows best. And God is pleased when you put His will above your own because you know Him from His Word and rely on His Spirit.
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own, you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Surrender and Allow Christ to Rule
Come to Jesus, rest from your works, and live by faith in Him.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
If you have been leading more than following in your relationship with God, confess this and ask for His help to switch the order. You give Jesus all your burdens, along with your “to-do list,” in exchange for His supernatural peace.
Dedicate yourself to prayer first thing every morning and ask God to order your day and redeem your time before your day even begins. Put God in charge and allow Him to give you a different day than the one you would have planned. Surrender your will to His and find your rest in Him.
Commit time each day to know the Lord Jesus Christ by reading and studying His Word, and you will begin to trust and follow Him. You will learn to walk by faith and not by sight. And when you choose to start your day with God rather than apart from Him, you will feel His pleasure and experience his grace, especially in times of trouble. We live in a sinful world, so we also need to rely on Him to put away sin in ourselves
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
Hear Jesus Speak to You from His Word
The Great Shepherd of the Sheep
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I and the Father are one.” John 10:27, 30
“Whoever serves me must follow Me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.” John 12:26
My Prayer for You
May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing His will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to Him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:20-21
Only He who wore the crown of thorns has the Sovereign right to rule!
