The Accuser

Posted on November 5, 2014 · Posted in Freedom in Christ, Our Adversary

Satan is the accuser, and he is the reason you live with guilt and shame even though you believe in Jesus?  He is the one who reminds you daily that you are defeated and hopeless, and tells you that you are an impostor, a failure that can never measure up.  The devil is the one who brings torments you with the sins of the past and beats you up with present sins.

The great dragon was hurled down, that ancient serpent called the devil or Satan, who leads the whole world astray.  He was hurled to the earth and his angels with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ.  For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.”  Revelation 12:9-10

Satan is called the “Accuser” and he is also called the “father of lies.”  He takes great delight in tormenting the conscience of the believer.  Your sins provide Satan with his grounds for accusation before God while your sense of guilt gives him the ground for accusation in your heart and mind.  Satan condemns you for your sins, and he is sure to remind you of your past sins so that the knife to your heart and conscience is twisted even further.  He can also attack you with “false guilt.”

Satan’s accusations always center on your “performance,” so it causes you to focus even more on yourself instead of God!  You are then vulnerable to the words of people whom Satan will use to make you feel that you can never measure up, and the downward spiral begins.

Satan is a liar, and he delights in false accusations.  He uses people who are willing to lie and falsely accuse others.

Jesus said to them, you belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire.  He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him.  When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.  John 8:44

The Bible tells us that even Jesus who lived a sinless life was accused by others.  Many believed the lies that Satan told and Jesus was crucified; even though He died willingly.  People still accuse God today!

Meanwhile, Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”  “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.  When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.  Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”  But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge, to the great amazement of the governor.  Matthew 27:11-14

Satan and the people he uses always tear down and never build up.  Satan uses the tongue to hurt, to slander, to falsely accuse, to lie, and to destroy the reputation of others.  We must confess to God that we have sinned when we allow Satan to use us in this way, and then ask God for His forgiveness.

One of the Ten Commandments: “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”  Exodus 20:16

A Guilty Conscience

You will remain defeated if your focus continues to be on yourself and how you can improve; always trying to do better but never feeling quite good enough.  Jesus saved you!   You don’t have to live your life any longer believing Satan’s lies; being defeated and living with guilt and shame.  Satan’s lies are destroyed by knowing and believing the truth of God’s Word and relying on the Holy Spirit.

Your conscience needs peace, and no amount of self-help or will-power will help.  Only Jesus can deliver you.  This is the reason that studying and applying God’s Word, the Bible, is so important!  The Bible teaches that Jesus is truth, and He is your Advocate.  Jesus is on your side, and He will always defend you before the Father.  Begin to believe what God, your Creator, says about you.

But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.  1 John 2:1

Therefore He (Jesus) is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them.  Hebrews 7:25

Satan wants you to forget, or not know that Jesus paid your debt for sin in full forever, so you will continue to believe his accusations! Hear this again, beloved of God:  your past sins, your present sins, and your future sins have all been paid for!  You have been set free forever through the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross for your sins!  God does not count your sins against you anymore because you are in Christ.

As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.  Psalm 103:12

All your sins have been paid for through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Believing this truth removes the power of the accusation.  With God’s help, begin to walk and live in this truth every day because Satan is a defeated foe!

God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them.  And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us.  We implore you on Christ’s behalf:  Be reconciled to God.  God made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.  2 Corinthians 5:19-21

Live by Faith in Christ

Always remember that the Christian life is never about what you do, or don’t do.  Live by faith in what Christ has already done!

Focus on Jesus, walk by faith in Him, and He will empower you to do His will.  With God’s help, live your life depending and relying on Jesus and not on yourself.  When you mess up and you surely will, the blood of Christ cleanses you from every sin that you confess.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  1 John 1:9

Always be aware of who you are listening to.  There are only two choices:  God who always loves you and has your best interests at heart, or Satan, the accuser and father of lies, who is God’s enemy and your enemy.  If you are feeling unworthy and stupid, or hopeless and defeated, remember that Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil.  Satan was defeated when Jesus died for your sins and rose again.  Therefore, don’t give Satan power by believing his lies.

The Holy Spirit of God within you will continue to defeat “the accuser” as you rely on Him.   I am praying that God’s truth will set you free, beloved of God!

The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.   1 John 3:8
